Honoring Excellence:
Dr. Blake Bloomberg
A leader, mentor, and role model shaping the future of agriculture at Black Hawk College East Campus
Being a livestock judging coach requires long hours, strong leadership, and a deep understanding of both animals and people. Few embody that commitment with the heart, dedication, and success of Dr. Blake Bloomberg, Associate Professor and Lead Livestock Judging Coach at Black Hawk College East Campus. In recognition of his outstanding impact on students and the agricultural community, Dr. Bloomberg has been named the 2024 Best of the Barns Award recipient for Junior College Livestock Judging Team Coach.
Dr. Bloomberg’s journey began in Berwick, Illinois, where he was raised on his family’s livestock operation. From an early age, he developed a strong passion for agriculture and livestock judging, learning valuable lessons in discipline, teamwork, and confidence. Over time, he realized he wanted to pass those lessons on to the next generation — inspiring young people not only in the show ring, but in life.
“When you’re passionate about helping them (students) succeed, it pushes you to constantly improve,” he explains.
That dedication is evident in everything he does, from daily practices on campus to high-pressure national competitions.
Dr. Bloomberg’s coaching philosophy is rooted in integrity, fairness, and teamwork. He emphasizes accountability while keeping the focus on collective success. “The team is the most important, not the individual,” he says — a principle that helps shape strong character and leadership skills in his students.
Throughout his career, Dr. Bloomberg has coached countless talented young people, many of whom have become like family. He even had the opportunity to coach his own siblings, Jake and Jamie, who have gone on to successful careers in the industry. He credits his parents, grandparents, and wife for opening doors and supporting his journey, along with influential mentors such as Jeremy Hahn, Dan Hoge, Andy Rash, Jake Franke, and Dr. Chris Skaggs.
For students considering livestock judging, Dr. Bloomberg offers this encouragement:
“The connections you make, the confidence you build, and the lessons you learn are invaluable. And remember, it’s okay to make mistakes along the way — they’re part of the journey.”
Through his passion, humility, and unwavering commitment to his students, Dr. Blake Bloomberg has made a lasting impact on Black Hawk College East Campus and the livestock industry as a whole. The Best of the Barns Award is more than a trophy — it represents the lives he has influenced and the future he continues to build.
