Black Hawk College East Foundation Kicks Off Employee Giving Campaign

"On the Brink of the Future… On the Wings of BHC!"

On March 23, 2015, the Black Hawk College East Foundation kicked off its employee giving campaign, an annual event that began in 2006. In 2011, it was given the name of e4e (Employees for Education) Employee Giving Campaign.

Since 2006, employees have supported education by contributing $83,196 to fund special initiatives for the Black Hawk College East Campus, including faculty/staff mini-grants, scholarships, lower lounge furnishings, front entrance and Building A landscaping, artwork for the Learning Resources Center and the soon-to-be-completed e4e Fitness Trail and Science Lab art installation. All of these projects benefit the students, faculty, staff and visitors of the East Campus.

Since 2012, retired employees, the East Foundation Board of Directors and the BHC Board of Trustees have been included in the campaign, as it gives them the opportunity to demonstrate a unified commitment to the employees’ efforts on behalf of the East Campus.

Last year, $10,079 was raised for the new Brink Outdoor Sculpture and scholarships.

Our two-year campaign continues in 2015 with a goal of $12,000 to help fund a new outdoor sculpture called "Brink". The tentative location for the artwork will be on the grassy area by the atrium of Building A, to the right of the entrance road. Brink will be enjoyed by students, employees and visitors who pass it each day. Because of the size and scope of the project, the 2014 and 2015 e4e Employee Giving Campaign proceeds will be utilized to fund the sculpture.

Brink has been commissioned by sculptor and Western Illinois University art professor Duke Oursler.

"My proposed sculpture speaks to the core disciplines and activities at Black Hawk College East Campus," Duke said.

"The intent of Brink is to act as a physical and metaphorical portal or entry point for the campus. Upon physically entering the campus and passing by the sculpture students and faculty are crossing a metaphorical threshold to the future; they are stepping beyond the ‘brink’ of their current knowledge and exploring new ideas and possibilities," he said.

Brink resembles the wings of a hawk. It is intended to encourage both students and faculty to reach for new ideas and solutions and push their craft to new heights. The focal point of the sculpture is a large illuminated sphere constructed from numerous icons/images that reference the various vocations, research and potential of the students and faculty of Black Hawk College.

Brink will have a presence both day and night. The sculpture will be constructed from 304 stainless steel, which will embrace the ambient light during the day and reflect the colored light emitted from its center point at night. Patterns of the icons will be projected onto the surrounding areas allowing the sculpture to interact with its surroundings while creating a place of significance for the campus.

"We take great pride in what the current and retired employees, as well as members of the East Foundation board and BHC trustees, have accomplished for the East Campus through the foundation’s annual employee giving campaigns," said Liz Breedlove, executive director of the Black Hawk College East Foundation.

"Their personal contributions make a significant difference in the lives of our students, faculty, staff and visitors to the East Campus by supporting many special initiatives that are not otherwise funded through the college. We are very appreciative of their support," she said.
